Cyprus is joining the Schengen Zone: Why is this significant for third country nationals living in Cyprus with a residence permit?

27 May 25

Currently, only Ireland and Cyprus among EU member states remain outside the Schengen Zone, which allows passport-free travel across much of Europe.

However, on May 11, 2025, Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides announced that the country aims to join the Schengen Zone by 2026. He confirmed that all required steps will be completed by the end of next year.

Why is this important?

For nationals of non-EU (third) countries, a Schengen visa allows travel across the Schengen Zone for up to 90 days within a 180-day period without internal border checks. Those holding a valid residence permit from any Schengen country can also move freely within the area for short stays without needing a separate visa.

The Schengen visa covers 29 member countries and some additional non-Schengen nations, enabling travel for tourism, business, family visits, or other non-work purposes.

Once Cyprus becomes a member of the Schengen Zone, third-country nationals who hold a valid Cypriot residence permit will be able to enjoy this same freedom of movement. They won’t need to apply for a separate Schengen visa to visit other participating countries for short stays.

This development significantly enhances the value of a residence permit issued by Cyprus. The country already offers several pathways for non-EU nationals to obtain such permits.
